Posted on 3/22/2021 by Edward I Jutkowitz, DMD, PC
Everything To Know About Receding GumsWhile your oral care focus usually tends to be on the teeth, you must understand that healthy gums are just as important. Receding gum or gum recession can cause sensitivity and bad breath; thus, be aware of the treatments available to stop it and avoid these uncomfortable symptoms.

Continue reading ahead to learn what exactly gum recession is and its causes.

What Is Gum Recession?

Gum recession is a periodontal disease where the gum surrounding your teeth pulls back or tears away, exposing more of the tooth or its root. When receding gums ensue, gaps or pockets form between the gum line and teeth, making it extremely easy for disease-instigating germ or bacteria to build up. If not treated promptly and correctly, the supporting bone structures and tissues of your teeth can be severely harmed and may even result in tooth loss.

At Edward I. Jutkowitz, D.M.D., P.C. - Periodontics and Implantology, Dr. Jutkowitz and Dr. Edward I. Jutkowitz can diagnose receding gum conditions and reduce its risks.

Symptoms Of Receding Gums

As gum recession progresses over time, you may notice common symptoms such as:
•  Bad breath
•  Exposed tooth roots
•  Swollen, red gums
•  Bleeding post brushing or flossing
•  Pain at the gum line
•  Loose teeth
•  Visibly shrinking gums.

Risk Factors Affecting Gum Recession

There is no exact cause for gum recession. A number of risk factors may cause this condition. The major ones are given below:

•  Aggressive Brushing – Not many people understand this, but brushing your teeth harder than needed will cause more harm than good.
•  Teeth Grinding/Bruxism – Grinding or clenching your teeth can exert excessive force on the teeth, resulting in receded gums.
•  Poor Dental Care – Neglecting oral care can lead to gingivitis and periodontal diseases such as gum recession.
•  Genetics – If your parents suffer from receding gums, chances are you will too.

If you suspect you have receding gums, fret not –there are various ways to treat it. Schedule an appointment with us at (516) 740-1848 and we will create a personalized treatment plan for you.
