Periodontal surgeries is an advanced treatment method prescribed for severe cases of periodontal gum disease. The main goal of these treatments is to clean the bacteria from beneath your gums, reshaping the bones that support your teeth and avoiding any future gum infection. Patients with severe bacterial infection around their gumline and the tissues that support teeth are usually preferred for periodontal surgery.
Main Types of Periodontal Surgeries
We perform gum lift surgery or gingival flap surgery in order to reinstate the natural appearance of your smile by recontouring the gum tissue. Depending on your case, we will subject you to either gingivoplasty and gingivectomy. In gingivoplasty, our dentists will recontour the gum tissues by getting rid of damaged soft tissues from the wall of a periodontal pocket. On the other hand, in a gingivectomy, our dentists will remove the excess tissue from enlarged gum tissues entirely to correct a gummy smile.
Crown lengthening is an advanced type of periodontal surgery which is undertaken when you need a new tooth or restoration but lack sufficient support from the gum tissue and the bone. In many cases, the area needing restoration is below the gum line and thus inaccessible. In such a case, our dentist will adjust the gum tissue and bone around the teeth to enhance their grip and support.
Dental implants are a common form of periodontal surgery where we use artificial teeth to replace the aesthetics, function, and feel of natural teeth. Made of titanium, we will embed these implants into the jawbone and allow it to fuse with it until it solidifies and becomes strong enough to support a crown.
These are a permanent solution to missing teeth and can last you a lifetime provided you take the necessary care. Unlike dentures or bridges, dental implants can retain your facial structure by avoiding bone deterioration that happens due to missing teeth.
