Is it Possible for Receding Gums to Grow Back?

Is it Possible for Receding Gums to Grow Back? The soft tissues surrounding your teeth are there to remain snugly holding onto the tooth and protect vulnerable parts of the tooth structure such as the root. When the gums start receding, they allow more serious dental problems to occur such as sensitivity and infection. Gum tissue may recede due to age, use of tobacco, poor alignment of teeth or misalignment of the bite, excessive brushing and flossing, facial trauma, teeth grinding, and gum disease.

Can Receded Gums Grow Back?

The harsh reality is that once gums recede, it is difficult for them to grow back. Any periodontist will tell you that once the gums have receded, you can only get them back into their usual position through treatment. You and the periodontist need to come up with a treatment plan that may involve surgically placing new tissue to cover the areas where the gums have receded.

Surgical placement of gum is done through a procedure known as gum grafting. A periodontist removes a tiny bit of tissue from the mouth, especially the roof and attaches it to the gum area or the existing gingiva. The grafted tissue will cover the exposed part of the tooth. If you suffer from substantial bone loss, the periodontist may perform a bone graft in addition to osseous surgery to help minimize the depth of the gum pockets because they can trap harmful bacteria, causing an infection to spread.

Keeping the Gums Firmly in Place

Although gum recession can arise due to aging, there are some things you can do to help prevent recession of the gums and avoid complex treatment. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and gently clean your teeth. Also, use the correct flossing products and techniques to prevent damage to soft tissues. If you grind your teeth or clench, wear a mouthguard at night. Additionally, rinse your mouth with antimicrobial mouthwash and see a dentist every six months for cleanings and checkups.
